The “Rite” Safari Luangwa Valley

Our “Rite” Safari – Luangwa hosted at Luambe Camp is the first of it’s kind!

It takes a Family Safari or Coming of Age trip and gives it way more meaning, depth and occasion. Our Rite Safaris’ celebrate a young man or woman coming of age – it’s like a 4 night Bar-Mitsvah in the Luangwa Valley with a combination of walking trails and game drives, sleep outs and specially curated moments to celebrate and honour our special young people!

How to get to Luambe 

Luambe National Park is located on the eastern bank of the Luangwa River, halfway between South and North Luangwa National Park. 

  1. FLY TO mfuwe airport

    Daily flights are available from Lusaka to to Mfuwe Airport (Proflight). 

  2. MEET & GREET: ROAD TRANSFER TO CAMP

    Luambe will collect the clients from the airport and drive them into camp.

  3. DEPARTURE DAY

    After check-out, Luambe management will transfer you back Mfuwe for your departure flight. 

TYPICAL ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrival at Luambe Camp

Mid-late afternoon transfer and check into camp followed by a bush braai and finger supper.

Day 2: Explore the Park on foot and by vehicle

Your first day will be spent getting to know the Park. Join your guide on a morning walk though the riverine forest, returning to camp for brunch followed by some chill time. The afternoon begins with a game drive followed by sundowners and dinner back at camp will bring Day 1 to a close.

Day 3: Bush Run, Breakfast with our local community and the Luangwa Sleep-Out

TODAY IS DIFFERENT!  Read what you will be doing below:

  1. MORNING BUSH RUN

    We begin with a morning bush run through the park under watch and escort of an armed National Parks scout and guide. At the of the run, you will be collected by our game drive vehicle to game drive to Chitungulu Village

  2. VISIT THE LOCAL CUMMUNITY

    We then visit our Chitungulu community to learn about their lives living and farming next to an unfenced National Park we then make breakfast for community which we share together.

  3. NAVIGATE YOURSELF TO THE SLEEP-OUT

    This afternoon gets exciting. We have a ‘blind’ departure by game vehicle into the Park and then, under close inspection of the guides and scout, you have to use what you have learned from your guides during to track your way to Kasikizi to find your incredible bush sleep out.

  4. SLEEP-OUT & NIGHT WATCH

    Enjoy an incredible bush dinner and sleep out in the wilds of the Luangwa where everyone gets a special few hours to ‘keep watch’ around the fire during the night.

Morning Safari Walk, Brunch and the “Rite” Celebration Ceremony

NOTE: We offer the “Ceremony” to groups who wish to make this part of their trip’s objectives. For families and groups wanting to have a more low-key tradional family or friendship trip, this afternoon’s events can easily be swapped out for safari activities.

The morning begins with a safari walk out of our sleep-out spot back towards main camp before returning into camp for brunch. After brunch, there is some downtime for everyone to rest up after their night sleeping out on the banks of the Luangwa.  This afternoon, we depart on our game drive before arriving at a beautiful spot overlooking the Luangwa for special sundowners – it is time for the Rite Safari “Ceremony” to begin!

The typical order of events runs as follows:

  1. INTRO SPEECH

    The Father/Mother/Mentor figure/s make speeches to their youngster / mentee about how they see them and call out the potential they see in them. It is a time to share your proudest moments and dreams for them.

  2. PASSING OF THE ‘BATON’

    Passing the Baton – this involves handing over a small but significant gift or symbol that marks their passage into adulthood. 

  3. ACCEPTANCE SPEECH

    The youngster/mentee then makes a speech in return acknowledging the influence on their lives these older figures have had on them and committing to uphold the values of the family, company or school etc. 

  4. WHISKEY TASTING

    Once the speeches are done, everyone enjoys a special whiskey or wine tasting together as the sun is setting over the Luangwa before returning to camp for dinner.

Day 5: Departure Day 

Early morning breakfast before checking out and heading back to Mfuwe in time for your return flight.
